Book reviews The Human Side of Leadership – Part 1

A practical and distinctive book on leadership that moved me through its depth on an emotional level. One of the few books on leadership that gets to the core and isn’t written in general management talk. Truly recommended for anyone seeking personal growth through interactions with other people.

Former Board member of Wilhelmina Hospital Assen

In her book The Human Side of Leadership, Wendy clearly explains in an easy-to-read manner the influence you have as a human being, both consciously and unconsciously. It becomes clear that changes within yourself can influence the way you handle leadership, change, and/or conflict. Because she makes very appropriate use of examples, the book reads smoothly, and you quickly see the essence.

A beautiful book that is very well written, relatable, and human. The book teaches you to look inward, connect with yourself, and then step outward from there. It helps you move from unconscious to conscious leadership: leadership grows on roots of self-knowledge, personal development, and awareness. The mix of text, examples, and questions helps deepen your self-exploration. It makes the book a practical guide to firmly grounded leadership.

Nanda de Bruin

Independent Social Scientist at Behind Behaviour

“The foundation of leadership starts with yourself.”

This book is for leaders who truly dare to look at themselves. It’s not a book you’ll read quickly from start to finish. The content of the book, full of information, concrete examples, and reflection questions, continually challenges you to understand both the inside and outside of your leadership. The book invites deep reflection, peer review, and/or discussions about leadership.

I have never read a book that is so strongly focused on the inner side of leadership. That’s what I really appreciate about the book. The emphasis is more on getting to know yourself better, which makes your leadership more powerful.

My advice is to read the book chapter by chapter, then take time to reflect. Additionally, I would recommend sharing your reflections with someone to enhance personal growth.

Book reviews The Human Side of Leadership – Part 2

This book is about leadership in situations where there are changes and conflicts. It mainly focuses on the psychological aspects of leadership and receiving guidance, on the experiences and feelings of those involved, and on how pain, emotions, and differences in needs between people play a role.

The book is written for leaders and managers who want to effectively coach their team, and who also wish to examine their own role and contribution to the situations that arise. The goal is to navigate oneself and others through changes and conflicts from a sense of safety.

Wendy has written a truly valuable book! This book is for anyone who wants to develop personally and in their relationships with others. It offers the opportunity and space to look at your own behavior and actions in a non-judgmental way.

For parents who unintentionally find themselves in conflict with their child or feel triggered by their own reactions, this book is extremely suitable. It helps you unravel what lies behind these feelings. Self-care is an important part of this book, and that is exactly where many parents can still grow.

I appreciate how Wendy broadens the concept of leadership to encompass society at large and does not limit it to work-related leadership. In short: this book is highly recommended!

A sharp and honest book with pleasant depth. The book The Human Side of Leadership offers beautiful, concrete tools for dealing with everyday humanity. The naturalness of recovery and change processes is clearly evident. A valuable addition for everyone who works and lives with people.

Rik Hennekam

Social worker and trainer

Wendy’s book The Human Side of Leadership encourages positive reflection and self-awareness. It helps me discover new, different ways to lead myself and others through change processes. Through the examples and clear descriptions, Wendy puts into words what I believe everyone can relate to—familiar situations. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter provide tools to understand these situations from a different perspective.

In short: it is a beautiful and impactful book. I immediately purchased the hardcover and will refer to it regularly.

Book reviews The Human Side of Leadership – Part 3

This book is accessible to read with challenging content. It is very comprehensive and offers a lot of information. In that sense, it is more of a workbook or textbook than a reading book.

Wendy van Mieghem’s style is characterized by beautiful, colorful illustrations on almost every page, providing a pleasant break. Additionally, the author uses many extra boxes in her book. These include boxes with additional explanations, advice on how to use the book most effectively, and clear, recognizable examples from everyday (work) life.

I personally found the relatable examples the most enjoyable to read, and they mainly help me better understand what the author describes in her explanations. It makes it manageable. So, no dry blocks of text, but rather small items in the chapters, which keeps it varied but also easy to follow.
