Veel mensen denken bij leiderschap in eerste instantie aan een manager. Iemand die voor een groep mensen een visie of doel formuleert en een richting geeft aan hoe deze visie of dit doel gerealiseerd dient te worden. De leider legt aan belanghebbenden binnen en buiten de groep verantwoording af over de besluiten die hij of zij neemt. Deze vorm van leiderschap wordt formeel leiderschap genoemd en heeft nauwe connecties met hi\u00ebrarchie, positie en formele macht.<\/p>\n<p>Vanuit <strong>formeel leiderschap<\/strong> wordt een kader voor verdere handelingen vorm gegeven. Het geeft structuur en helderheid over hoe er samengewerkt dient te worden. Dat kan erg prettig zijn. Wel is een nuancering nodig: het maakt <em>op papier<\/em> duidelijk hoe dingen horen te verlopen. De praktijk is vaak een stuk weerbarstiger. Bij de vertaling van papier naar praktijk dienen vaak een aantal hobbels te worden genomen. Je kunt het vergelijken met hoe je met jezelf omgaat. Als een leider vertrouwen en oefenruimte schenkt aan zijn teamleden, garandeert dit niet dat zij een groei zullen doorlopen. Mensen moeten namelijk ook in staat zijn om de ruimte en het vertrouwen die worden geboden, te benutten. Oftewel: ze hebben het nodig om ook van binnen ruimte toe te laten en vertrouwen te ontvangen. Alleen dan kan hun zelfvertrouwen groeien en zetten ze stappen vooruit.<\/p>\n<p>Groeien is voor veel mensen echter eng. Verandering ook. Het werpt je als het ware terug op jezelf. Mensen vallen bij uitnodigingen voor groei of verandering daarom vaak terug op hun eigen individuele ontwikkelingsniveau. Zelfs wanneer een doel helder is geformuleerd, is het maar de vraag in hoeverre andere mensen in de praktijk handelen in overeenstemming met, en ten dienste van, dit doel. De realiteit van leiderschap is daarom genuanceerd en complex. Elke laag in de organisatie en afdeling kent zo zijn eigen doelen, taken en uitdagingen. En ook z\u2019n eigen cultuur.<\/p>\n<p>Dit maakt dat <em>contact, communicatie<\/em> en <em>afstemming<\/em> tussen de verschillende lagen en afdelingen voortdurend aandacht, tijd en moeite vragen. De mate waarin je erin slaagt om helder en constructief contact te maken, te communiceren en te verbinden, bepaalt voor een belangrijk deel de kwaliteit van samenwerken. Dit zijn mensen die, ongeacht hun plek of rol in de groep, zich ge\u00efnspireerd verbinden met de taak of opdracht en hierdoor een motiverende uitwerking hebben op anderen. Informele leiders zijn degenen die vanuit een intrinsieke (innerlijke) motivatie hun schouders zetten onder een bepaalde klus zonder de formele grenzen van hun functie te betwisten. Ze zitten zelf lekker in hun vel en ervaren hierdoor van binnenuit een natuurlijke draagkracht waarmee ze anderen (on)bewust ondersteunen en inspireren.<\/p>\n<p>Informele leiders communiceren helder en constructief, stellen op een opbouwende manier kritische vragen en brengen de uitvoering van een project zo een stuk verder. Deze leiders zijn energiek, nemen initiatief, leggen verbindingen en proberen dingen uit. Ze observeren hun omgeving en stemmen af op wat nodig is. Ze luisteren goed naar anderen, kunnen op een opbouwende manier feedback ontvangen en leren van hun fouten. Informele leiders hebben realiteitszin, kijken kritisch naar zichzelf en gaan moeilijkheden niet uit de weg. Het zijn mensen die emotioneel en mentaal krachtig staan, zonder anderen te overheersen of iets op te leggen.
